Tenom town is located some 3
hours by road from Kota Kinabalu city in
Interior Division of Sabah, East Malaysia "on
the North Borneo". Buses and hired taxis are
available at the bus terminal near Kota Kinabalu
Merdeka Field "Jalan Padang". The town was
formerly called Fort Birch in the
colonial period. Its population was estimated to
be around 46,200 in the year 2000. Get to know the Murut
culture and traditions at the Murut
Cultural Centre (tel: 087-302421) and
for the adventurous, white water rafting
at Padas River.
The principal ethnic groups
are Murut (60%), followed by Chinese (20%),
Malay (10%), and Kadazan-Dusun (8%). The area is
primarily an agricultural zone, with Coffer
Beans, maize, vegetables, Oil Palm and
Rubber Trees the major crops. Tenom is one of
Sabah's more scenic interior locations, with the
Crocker Range towering impressively immediately
behind town. It also known as the "gateway to
Murut country".
In the center of Tenom is a
statue to Ontoros
Antonom (1885-1915), who led the
Rundum Revolt of
the Murut people against the British colonists
in the Rundum District
of Tenom in 1915.
The
Sabah Agricultural Park Lagud
Sebrang Agriculture Research Station,
the Tenom Orchid Centre
and the Murut Cultural
Center are located outside of town.
Bus rides cost approximately
RM18.30 per person (one way). A taxi ride from
the Merdeka Field bus station will cost around
RM30.00 per person (one way).
Getting there by North Borneo Railway
or by "RailCar"
to Tenom, with a drive to Beaufort, a rural town
situated at the confluence of the Padas River
and villages. and Pegalan rivers.
Arrive Tenom
town, you can by transport to the Tenom
Agricultural Park, a journey which will
take approximately 25 minutes. Register at the
entrance and proceed for a tour of this
agricultural park. Officially launched in March
25, 2001 by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, the
agriculture park showcase Sabah's rich
agricultural heritage. In the beautifully
landscaped gardens are some of the most unique
plants from the fragrant to the rare and exotic
Borneo orchids. Here you can discover the magic
of the tropics from the evolution of plants to
today's incredible diversity of native and
introduced species.
